mining for gems

One of my favorite parts of running an Etsy shop is deciding how to photograph my items. I sometimes like to incorporate props for added visual interest; my collection of uncut gems serves this purpose well.

I love the colors, shapes, and textures that they add to the scene. And I love using them because they remind me of where I got them; I vacation every summer in the mountains of North Carolina with my boyfriend’s family, and it’s tradition for us to go to a cool little place called Foggy Mountain Gem Mine in Boone, NC to sift through buckets of dirt and rocks to find the gems. It’s very touristy, but I love it. I think the gems are so lovely, even uncut and unpolished.

What kind of props do you prefer to use in your product photography?
